Be great without cheating
Perhaps I came to my job as a media coach and marketing consultant to
balance my need for deep inner reflection and outward expression. For
over a decade I have faced my own ambivalence about promoting others.
However, not until I began promoting myself, did those feeling become
truly personal. This book began a serious exploration of what it means
to move from the comfort of private person to the unknown territory of
public personality.
In my twenties I believed I needed to train myself out of my more thoughtful
nature into someone more outgoing. I took jobs that demanded extroversion.
The first job I sought was in sales. My manager took me aside one day
and told me that I'd never be a truly great salesperson because I didn't
have enough larceny in my heart. That phrase haunted me for a long time
because I wanted to be great, but I didn't want to cheat to get there.
Most women don't want to cheat to get where they want to go.
Why this book is different
When I tell women that this book isn't like other sales, marketing and
publicity books that sometimes use duplicitous means and industry jargon
along with sex, sports, or war metaphors to express how they are supposed
to accomplish their goals, they let out a little cheer. Phrases like "crush
the competition," "attack your workload," "batten down the hatches," "penetrate,"
"nail them," "put out," and "beat them to a pulp," offend me. You may
feel the same way.
What I am offering you on the following pages is a book that is free
of that kind of language. I believe that by changing the way we speak,
we change our patterns of thought, actions and results. Our words carry
our intentions.
There are already many good books on publicity and marketing that tell
you how to get something cheap, for free, or for a small fee. They tell

I use?"
Be the change you want to see in the world
Gandhi is good example of how to accomplish this wish. Famous for saying,
"My life is my message," he was a true manifestation of his teaching.
For me, my daily practice is living a life that is my message. I say "practice"
because I so often fail. Yet, I will continue to practice every day, over
and over again, and you can, too. Becoming the message you want to give,
integrating your life, work and being, is the kind of "marketing" that
is at the heart of this book.
For the past thirteen years I have used Gandhi's practice as my guide
for working with people in many different professions including executives,
best-selling authors, and successful entrepreneurs in many different fields,
and elite e-businesses. I have media coached people who have appeared
on 60 minutes, Oprah, E! The Entertainment Channel, CBS, NBC, CNN and
many others. My clients have been reviewed and interviewed in the top
national radio and TV shows and publications in the United States.
In addition I have interviewed thousands of potential sales people for
corporations and assessed them for skills necessary to do the job. I bring
to you the knowledge and experience I have gained from working with many
